Economics speaker Martín Redrado is one of Latin America’s most influential economists and a globally respected authority on emerging markets, monetary policy, and economic leadership in times of uncertainty. Best known as the former President of the Central Bank of Argentina, he combines rigorous economic analysis with decades of experience at the highest levels of government, international finance, and academia.
Redrado led Argentina’s Central Bank from 2004 to 2010, where he built the monetary and financial framework that helped steer the country through the aftermath of its worst crisis and shielded it during the global financial crisis of 2008 and 2009. His defense of central bank independence drew international attention in 2010, when he refused a government order to hand over foreign reserves and was removed by decree, only to be reinstated by the courts before resigning on his own terms. During this period he also chaired the Americas Committee of the Bank for International Settlements.
Redrado earned a master’s degree from Harvard University specializing in finance and international economics, and began his career working with economist Jeffrey Sachs on Bolivia’s stabilization program before holding senior roles at Salomon Brothers and Security Pacific Bank. In Argentina, he served as President of the National Securities Commission, modernizing capital market regulation, and as Secretary of Commerce and International Economic Relations. He founded the think tank Fundación Capital, which he still directs, and today shares his expertise globally as director of the Master in Central Banking at Asia Business School in Kuala Lumpur and as a visiting professor at Florida International University. He is also the author of several influential books on globalization and economic policy, including one with a foreword by former US Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan.
As a speaker, Martín Redrado helps audiences make sense of a volatile global economy. He speaks with clarity and independence on emerging markets, monetary and financial policy, global megatrends, and the economic outlook for Latin America, translating complex dynamics into practical insight for business and government leaders. Audiences value his rare combination of frontline policymaking experience and analytical rigor, and his ability to turn uncertainty into a framework for confident decision-making.
Redrado offers an independent, firsthand reading of Argentina's dramatic economic shifts, examining how the current reform agenda emerged, what is driving it, and what its results may mean for the country and the region. A clear-eyed look at the conditions behind major economic change and whether similar shifts could take hold elsewhere.
Drawing on decades of work in emerging economies, Redrado examines the global forces reshaping growth, from shifting trade and capital flows to technology and geopolitics. He explores the evolving role of emerging markets and the factors that make economies more resilient in the face of financial and economic shocks.
With an independent perspective shaped by decades of policymaking, Redrado analyzes the forces defining the region's prospects. He explains how global trends land differently across Latin American economies and outlines the structural factors that will shape growth in the short and medium term, with a country-by-country lens.
From defending central bank independence under intense political pressure to navigating global crises, Redrado shares hard-won lessons on decision-making when the stakes are high and the outlook is unclear. A talk on integrity, resilience, and steady leadership in turbulent economic times.
