David Julius is a Nobel Prize–winning American physiologist and biochemist whose discoveries transformed how science understands pain, sensation, and the body’s connection to the world around it. Awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, speaker David Julius is recognized for uncovering the molecular mechanisms that let humans perceive heat, cold, and touch, work that continues to shape medicine, neuroscience, and drug development.
At the University of California, San Francisco, Julius pursued a bold question: how does the body convert physical sensation into meaningful signals in the brain? By studying naturally occurring compounds such as the heat of chili peppers and the cooling sensation of menthol, he identified the receptors that act as biological sensors, translating environmental stimuli into nerve impulses. These findings reframed pain from a subjective experience into a precise, measurable biological process.
Julius’s research opened new possibilities for one of medicine’s hardest challenges: treating pain safely and effectively, including the search for non-addictive alternatives to traditional pain medications. Today he is professor and chair of the Department of Physiology and the Morris Herzstein Chair in Molecular Biology and Medicine at UCSF. His honors include the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience, and the Canada Gairdner International Award, and he is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.
For audiences, David Julius connects cutting-edge science to universal themes of curiosity, patience, and resilience, showing how transformative breakthroughs emerge not from chasing immediate commercial goals but from asking deeper questions and embracing uncertainty. As a speaker, David Julius brings clarity to complex ideas and ranks among Aurum’s most distinguished science speakers, offering leaders a rare window into how foundational discovery drives lasting innovation.
David Julius explores how the human body senses heat, cold, and pain, and why these fundamental processes matter far beyond the laboratory. Drawing on his Nobel Prize–winning research, he shows how understanding complex systems can lead to breakthroughs that transform medicine, decision-making, and innovation across industries.
David Julius shares how curiosity-driven research led to discoveries that reshaped neuroscience and global health. This talk highlights the importance of asking unconventional questions, embracing uncertainty, and letting long-term thinking guide innovation, offering valuable lessons for leaders navigating complex and rapidly evolving environments.
This keynote focuses on how basic scientific discovery becomes real-world application. David Julius illustrates how foundational insights into human biology can unlock new approaches to problem-solving, inspire safer technologies, and influence how organizations think about risk, responsibility, and progress.
Drawing on decades of research where outcomes were uncertain and stakes were high, David Julius discusses resilience, patience, and ethical responsibility in innovation. This talk resonates with leaders in healthcare, technology, and research-driven industries seeking sustainable paths to long-term impact.
