Shawn Layden is the former Chairman of PlayStation Worldwide Studios at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), where he led first-party content strategy and development across one of the most influential creative organizations in modern entertainment. Over a 32-year career at Sony, he shaped the trajectory of the PlayStation brand from the inside, helping to define what console gaming would become for hundreds of millions of players worldwide.
Entertainment speaker Shawn Layden is best known for steering PlayStation’s most ambitious creative bets and for expanding the PlayStation universe far beyond the console. In 2019 he established PlayStation Productions, the studio behind the film and television adaptations of PlayStation’s most valuable game IP, opening a new chapter in the convergence of games, film, and streaming entertainment.
Before becoming Chairman of Worldwide Studios, Layden served as President and CEO of SIE America, leading the PlayStation business across the United States, Canada, and Latin America, and earlier as President of SIE Japan. He also held senior leadership roles in Europe, based in London. His Sony career began in Tokyo with corporate roles that included five years as personal assistant to Akio Morita, the legendary co-founder of Sony Corporation, an experience few Western executives in global business can claim.
Since leaving SIE, Layden has become one of the most respected and quoted independent voices in interactive entertainment. He advises several technology start-ups in game-adjacent fields, previously served as strategic advisor to Tencent Games, and is a founding board member of the Girls Make Games Scholarship Fund, which supports young women pursuing careers in game development. He speaks frequently about the future of the medium, the economics of triple-A development, and how the industry must evolve to remain creatively healthy. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in American Studies, he is also fluent in Japanese.
As a speaker, Shawn Layden brings senior audiences a rare insider’s view of an industry now larger than film and music combined. He speaks with candor about ballooning development budgets, the creative cost of risk aversion, and the lessons of running global teams across deeply different business cultures. Executives, investors, and creative leaders leave with sharper strategic instincts, a clearer read on where games and interactive entertainment are heading, and a master class in leading at the intersection of technology, culture, and storytelling.
Drawing on decades inside Sony's first-party studios, Layden offers a candid diagnosis of where AAA game development is today: longer cycles, higher risk, narrower creative bets, and a fragile economic model. He maps the forces reshaping the industry, from AI to live service to indie resurgence, and where the smartest creative and capital bets are heading.
Triple-A game budgets have crossed thresholds once reserved for blockbuster films, with consequences for risk, originality, and sustainability. Layden, who greenlit some of the most ambitious productions in PlayStation history, breaks down how the industry got here, why it matters for investors and platform holders, and what a healthier economic model for premium interactive entertainment could look like.
From the early PlayStation era through PS5, Layden has lived the modern history of console gaming. This talk is a strategic narrative of how a hardware-driven niche grew into a global entertainment category, the inflection points that mattered, the bets that paid off, and the lessons every leader in media, tech, and entertainment can take from one of the great platform stories of the last 30 years.
Layden has led PlayStation businesses in Japan, Europe, and the Americas, building and managing creative teams across deeply different working cultures. He shares practical frameworks for cross-cultural leadership, communication, and decision-making, useful for any global executive whose organization spans continents and creative disciplines.
With five years as personal assistant to Sony co-founder Akio Morita and decades leading inside Sony's culture, Layden offers a rare first-person account of what it actually takes for a Western executive to thrive at the highest levels of a Japanese company. A talk full of pattern recognition, humility, and hard-earned cross-cultural intelligence.
