Motivational speaker Larry Miller is Chairman of the Jordan Brand Advisory Board at Nike and one of the most respected Black business leaders in the United States. He helped build Michael Jordan’s namesake brand from a roughly $200 million shoe line into a global powerhouse worth several billion dollars. But the path that took him to the top is unlike almost any other in corporate America, and for most of his career he kept it hidden.
Miller grew up on the streets of West Philadelphia in the 1960s. At 16, as a gang member, he shot and killed an 18-year-old named Edward White, and he later served time for that crime and for a series of armed robberies. While incarcerated, he made a decision that would change everything: he enrolled in a prison education program, eventually graduating with honors from Temple University and later earning an MBA from La Salle. For decades afterward, fearing it would end his career, he told almost no one about his past.
Miller climbed the corporate ladder at companies including Kraft and Campbell Soup before joining Nike in the late 1990s to lead its U.S. apparel business. When the company spun out a brand around Michael Jordan, he was named its president, and over two separate terms he guided the Jordan Brand to multibillion-dollar growth across sport, fashion, and culture. From 2007 to 2012 he stepped away to serve as president of the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers, where the team reached three straight playoffs and its arena became a sustainability landmark in American pro sports. He returned to Jordan Brand and, in 2019, became the first chairman of its Advisory Board.
In 2022, Miller finally told his whole story in the bestselling memoir JUMP: My Secret Journey from the Streets to the Boardroom, co-written with his daughter Laila Lacy and supported by Michael Jordan and Phil Knight. Before publishing, he met with Edward White’s family to take accountability and seek a measure of reconciliation, and he has since worked to support White’s descendants. Today he is a leading advocate for prison reform and second chances, channeling his experience into initiatives that help formerly incarcerated people find work and rebuild their lives.
As a speaker, Larry Miller delivers one of the most powerful redemption stories in business today. He speaks on resilience, accountability, leadership, and the transformative power of second chances, showing audiences how people and organizations grow when they lead with purpose and empathy. His message resonates far beyond sports: that a person’s worst mistake need not define the rest of their life, and that talent is found in places most leaders overlook.
Larry Miller shares what it takes to lead with purpose in a fast-moving world, and how empowering leadership creates cultures where people feel valued and motivated to do their best work. Drawing on his years building the Jordan Brand, he offers practical approaches to building trust, encouraging open dialogue, and uniting teams around a shared mission. Audiences leave with strategies they can put to work right away to strengthen their own leadership.
Miller explores the principles that turned the Jordan Brand into a global cultural force, and why authenticity and genuine community engagement sit at the heart of lasting brand loyalty. Through personal stories and real examples, he shows how honest storytelling and a commitment to social responsibility create deep, durable connections with consumers. It is a clear roadmap for anyone working to build a brand with relevance, resonance, and staying power.
In this session, Miller examines the central role that learning from failure plays in building high-performing teams. Reflecting on his experience in demanding environments, he shows how collaboration, curiosity, and innovation drive success, and how leaders can create cultures where people feel safe to take risks and contribute bold ideas. Leaders walk away with tools to unlock creativity and drive continuous improvement.
In his most personal keynote, Larry Miller reflects on his journey from incarceration to the executive suite, and on what that path taught him about empathy-driven leadership. He makes the case that offering second chances strengthens individuals, teams, and entire organizations, and shares how leaders can build inclusive environments where people grow. It is a moving, unforgettable talk that invites audiences to rethink the true impact of compassion and accountability in leadership.
