Political speaker Iván Duque served as President of Colombia from 2018 to 2022, taking office at age 41 as the youngest elected president in the country’s history. A lawyer by training, he spent nearly a decade in Washington at the Inter-American Development Bank before entering Colombian politics, and today he is widely recognized for his work on sustainability, security, and democratic leadership.
Duque’s public career began in 2000 as an advisor at Colombia’s Ministry of Finance, after which he represented the country at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) from 2001 to 2010 and later led the bank’s Culture, Creativity, and Solidarity Division. It was there that he developed the idea of the “Orange Economy,” a framework for harnessing the creative and cultural industries as engines of growth, which he set out in a widely read IDB book. After returning to Colombia, he served as a Senator from 2014 to 2018 before winning the presidency.
From the Presidency to the Global Stage
As president, Duque campaigned on a platform of “legality, entrepreneurship, and equality” and focused his term on issues including migration, higher education, infrastructure, security, and environmental protection. His government oversaw Colombia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and placed conservation high on the agenda: among the initiatives his administration highlights are the expansion of protected areas to cover about a third of the national territory, the Leticia Pact for the Amazon, and a sharp increase in non-conventional renewable energy.
