    George Osborne biography

Political speaker George Osborne is a former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer and one of the most influential figures in British politics of the past two decades. He served as Chancellor from 2010 to 2016, adding the role of First Secretary of State in 2015, and was the chief architect of the economic strategy of David Cameron’s governments. Today he works at the intersection of politics, finance, and technology as Managing Director and Head of OpenAI for Countries.

Osborne was elected Member of Parliament for Tatton in 2001 and became Shadow Chancellor in 2005, the same year he ran Cameron’s successful campaign for the Conservative Party leadership. As Chancellor through the aftermath of the global financial crisis, he led a program to reduce the UK’s budget deficit, introduced the National Living Wage, and championed the Northern Powerhouse agenda to rebalance growth across England. After campaigning for Britain to remain in the European Union, he left government in 2016 and was appointed a Companion of Honour.

From the Treasury to Finance, Media, and AI

After leaving Parliament in 2017, Osborne became Editor of the London Evening Standard and later its Editor-in-Chief. He advised BlackRock, became a partner at the advisory firm Robey Warshaw, and in 2021 was appointed Chair of the British Museum. He also founded the Northern Powerhouse Partnership and has been a visiting fellow at Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Hoover Institution.

In December 2025 he joined OpenAI to lead OpenAI for Countries, the company’s initiative to help governments build AI infrastructure and capabilities. With former Labour minister Ed Balls, he co-hosts Political Currency, an award-winning podcast on politics and economics. He studied Modern History at Magdalen College, Oxford.

As a speaker, George Osborne combines an insider’s account of running the UK economy with a current view from the front line of artificial intelligence. He speaks with candor and humor about the global economy, geopolitics, the future of Britain and Europe, and how AI is changing the relationship between governments and technology companies. Business leaders and investors leave with a clearer view of the political and economic forces shaping markets and of what they mean for strategy.
