Geoffrey Parker is a leading scholar of platform strategy, network economics, and the innovation challenges of the energy transition. The Charles E. Hutchinson ’68A Professor of Engineering Innovation at Dartmouth College, where he also serves as Faculty Director of the Arthur L. Irving Institute for Energy and Society, he co-developed the foundational theories behind the platform economy and now applies that thinking to some of the most important problems in technology and energy.
Technology speaker Geoffrey Parker, with Marshall Van Alstyne, co-developed the theory of two-sided markets and the concept of the “inverted firm,” ideas that reshaped how economists and executives understand digital platforms like Uber, Airbnb, Amazon, and Apple. Together they identified the “chicken-and-egg” problem at the heart of every platform, how to attract two interdependent sides of a market at once, and the strategies that solve it. He is the co-author, with Van Alstyne and Sangeet Paul Choudary, of Platform Revolution, the definitive guide to platform business models, and a visiting scholar at the MIT Sloan School and researcher at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy.
Parker brings a distinctive engineer’s perspective to strategy, shaped by early roles in engineering and finance at General Electric before his academic career. Today his research extends platform and network thinking into new domains: data sharing and governance, the role of data and AI in industrial energy efficiency, and how to build markets that accelerate the decarbonization of energy systems. As Faculty Director of Dartmouth’s Irving Institute, he works at the intersection of technology, markets, and the clean-energy future.
