Speaker Stéphane Garelli is one of the world’s foremost authorities on competitiveness and global economic strategy. As Professor Emeritus of World Competitiveness at IMD Business School in Lausanne and at the University of Lausanne, he has spent more than three decades shaping how nations, businesses, and leaders understand what drives prosperity. He founded the IMD World Competitiveness Center, the institution behind the World Competitiveness Ranking that benchmarks more than sixty economies each year and remains one of the most cited global benchmarks in economic policy.
Before dedicating himself to academic research, Garelli held prominent roles across business, media, and global governance. He served as Managing Director of the World Economic Forum, where he oversaw the Davos annual meetings. He chaired the board of the Swiss newspaper Le Temps, held positions at Banque Edouard Constant and Sandoz Financial and Banking Holding, and advised the management team of Hewlett-Packard. He also sits on the International Olympic Committee’s commission on Sustainability and Legacy and on the board of the Fondation Jean Monnet pour l’Europe.
Garelli’s intellectual influence extends well beyond the lecture hall. His bestselling Top Class Competitors: How Nations, Firms, and Individuals Succeed in the New World of Competitiveness remains a foundational text in the field, and his accessible Are You a Tiger, a Cat or a Dinosaur? reframed competitiveness for a broad readership. His most recent book, World Competitiveness: Rewriting the Rules of Global Prosperity, published by Wiley, examines how protectionism, digital disruption, and geopolitical fragmentation are reshaping the economic order, and why credible institutions increasingly separate the economies that thrive from those that stall. His central argument is that globalization is not disappearing but being redrawn: the world remains connected, yet the rules of the game are no longer global.
As a speaker, Stéphane Garelli delivers data-rich, thought-provoking keynotes that translate complex macroeconomic trends into decisions leaders can act on. Fortune 500 companies, family businesses, and heads of state turn to him for clarity on navigating uncertainty, building resilience, and securing competitive advantage in a rapidly shifting world. Audiences leave with a sharper map of where global competition is heading and a practical sense of how to position their organizations to win within it.
The global economic order is being rewritten by protectionism, digital transformation, and geopolitical fragmentation. Drawing on decades of research and the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking, Stéphane Garelli maps which nations and industries are gaining ground and which are slipping behind. He offers a clear-eyed reading of the forces reshaping trade, investment, and talent flows, and gives executives a strategic framework for positioning their organizations to thrive amid complexity. Attendees leave knowing how to turn macro-level disruption into micro-level competitive advantage.
Competitiveness is not only a matter of economic indicators; it is fundamentally about people and culture. In this thought-provoking keynote, Garelli explores why the most successful nations, companies, and leaders share one trait: a willingness to reinvent themselves continuously. Drawing on case studies from around the world, he examines how resilience, ambition, and comfort with uncertainty separate winners from the rest, challenging leaders to look beyond operational efficiency and build the organizational mindset that sustains excellence through turbulence and transformation.
Digital readiness is fast becoming the decisive factor in national and corporate competitiveness. In this forward-looking keynote, Garelli analyzes how artificial intelligence, automation, and data-driven decision-making are creating new winners and losers across industries and geographies. He explores what it takes to close the digital competitiveness divide and offers actionable strategies for leaders who want to harness technology as an engine of sustainable growth, from government policy to corporate innovation.
