Dr. Jörg Kukies is one of very few leaders who has operated at the highest levels of both global finance and national government, giving him a rare dual-lens view of how markets and political decisions shape one another. A former Federal Minister of Finance of Germany and a former Co-CEO of Goldman Sachs Germany, he has sat on both sides of the table where economic policy is made, and can translate the forces moving the global economy into terms any audience can act on.
The finance speaker Jörg Kukies served as Germany’s Federal Minister of Finance from November 2024 to May 2025, appointed at a pivotal moment for Europe’s economic direction. Before that he spent three years as State Secretary in the Federal Chancellery, responsible for economic, financial, climate, and European policy, and served as Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s personal sherpa at the G7 and G20 summits, placing him at the center of the world’s most important economic negotiations. Earlier, he was a State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance from 2018.
Before entering government, Kukies built a seventeen-year career at Goldman Sachs across London and Frankfurt, rising to Co-Chief Executive Officer of Goldman Sachs Germany and Austria after leading the firm’s equities and equity-derivatives businesses in Europe. That combination, deep capital-markets expertise paired with senior government experience, is genuinely rare. He holds a degree in economics from the Panthéon-Sorbonne in Paris, a Master of Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, where he studied as a McCloy Scholar, and a PhD in Finance from the University of Chicago. He is known for making complex financial and economic issues genuinely understandable to non-specialist audiences.
As a speaker, Jörg Kukies offers audiences an authoritative, insider’s read on the global economy and the decisions shaping it. He speaks on the outlook for the global and European economy, financial markets, regulation, and geopolitics, the future of Europe’s competitiveness and economic policy, and leadership at the intersection of business and government. Audiences gain a clear, senior-level understanding of the economic forces defining the years ahead, from someone who has helped steer them.
Few people have read the global economy from as privileged a vantage point as a former finance minister and Goldman Sachs executive. Kukies gives audiences a clear, authoritative assessment of where the world economy is heading, the major risks and opportunities on the horizon, and how markets, inflation, debt, and growth are likely to interact, insight grounded in both market experience and government decision-making.
Europe faces profound questions about its economic future, competitiveness, energy, industrial strategy, and its place between the United States and China. Drawing on his time at the center of German and European economic policy, Kukies explores the challenges and choices facing the continent, and what businesses and investors should understand about the direction Europe is likely to take.
Kukies has sat on both sides of the table, as a senior banker and as a policymaker, which gives him an unusually complete view of how political decisions move markets and how markets constrain politics. He explains how regulation, fiscal policy, and geopolitics actually get made and how they ripple through the financial system, helping leaders anticipate rather than merely react to policy change.
Having led at the top of both a global investment bank and a national finance ministry, Kukies reflects on leadership across two very different worlds, and what each can learn from the other. He shares lessons on decision-making under pressure, navigating complexity and crisis, and leading effectively when the stakes are measured in national and economic consequences.
