Speaker Ioannis Ioannou is one of the most cited academic voices in corporate sustainability and ESG strategy. As Associate Professor at London Business School and Associate Editor of Management Science and the Strategic Management Journal, his research sits in the top 0.1% of most-cited scholars globally, with more than 20,000 citations. He advises boards, investors, and senior executives navigating the transition to sustainable business models.
His research focuses on the strategic integration of sustainability, the investment implications of corporate responsibility, and what he calls “Aligned Capitalism”, a framework for designing systems where market incentives reinforce, rather than undermine, long-term value creation. His co-authored paper on corporate social performance won the JIBS Decade Award, and his work appears regularly in Harvard Business Review, the Financial Times, Bloomberg, and Forbes.
Prof. Ioannou serves as Co-Chair of the Sustainability Advisory Panel at Merck KGaA, sits on the ESG Advisory Board of DWS Group (one of the world’s largest asset managers, with roughly $900 billion under management), and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Sustainable Risk Assessment Framework, the Board of the Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability, and an advisor to TreeApp. He also designed and delivers a six-week online programme at London Business School that has trained more than 1,000 senior leaders and board directors worldwide.
He holds a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University and Harvard Business School, and a magna cum laude degree from Yale. Recognized as a LinkedIn Top Voice on sustainability, he is one of the most influential public-facing academics in the field.
As a speaker, Ioannis Ioannou gives sustainability audiences what they rarely get from either consultants or activists: rigorous evidence, clear strategic logic, and a usable agenda for the boardroom. Senior leaders leave with a sharper view of how sustainability creates competitive advantage and a concrete plan for embedding it into strategy.
Sustainability has crossed the line from corporate trend into core strategic terrain. In this keynote, Prof. Ioannis Ioannou of London Business School maps the macro forces that have made sustainability a critical competitive variable: capital allocation, regulation, talent, and consumer behavior. Drawing on more than two decades of research, he unpacks what sustainability really means in the corporate context, the cost of treating it as a side function, and how leading companies are translating it into measurable financial and societal impact.
Committing to a sustainable business model is the easy part. Designing one that scales, performs, and stands up to investor scrutiny is harder. Prof. Ioannou draws on his research and advisory work with multinationals to give senior leaders the tools to build, measure, and report sustainable business models. He covers the integration of ESG into strategy and operations, the metrics that actually move investor and stakeholder behavior, and real-world case studies from companies that have scaled sustainability globally, including where they got it wrong.
Sustainability creates trade-offs, and most leadership teams underestimate them. In this keynote, Prof. Ioannou equips senior executives with practical tools for identifying their critical stakeholders, surfacing conflict early, and building strategies that hold up under political, investor, and societal pressure. Leaders leave with a clearer view of which stakeholder voices should shape strategy and which should not, and a framework for navigating ESG trade-offs without sacrificing long-term performance.
For ESG to last beyond a single executive sponsor, it has to live inside culture, systems, processes, and incentives. Prof. Ioannou shares lessons from successful sustainability transformations across industries, with a focus on how to translate strategy into operating reality. Audiences leave with actionable insights on aligning incentives, building accountability, and avoiding the most common failure modes that derail ESG inside large organizations.
Following competitors on ESG is easy. Defining the category is harder, and more valuable. In this keynote, Prof. Ioannou challenges senior leaders to rethink the role of business in society and the personal career implications of leading through a sustainability transition. Drawing on his research on Aligned Capitalism, he equips executives with the mindset, skills, and frameworks to mobilize their organizations and become the voice that shapes the industry agenda.
