Keynote speaker Denis Mukwege is a world-renowned gynaecologist, human rights champion, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate whose tireless work has transformed the global response to conflict-related sexual violence. A powerful voice for justice and human dignity, speaker Denis Mukwege brings firsthand experience from the frontlines of one of the world’s most devastating humanitarian crises to stages around the world.
Dr. Mukwege founded Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1999. What began as a maternity clinic soon became one of the most important centres for treating survivors of wartime sexual violence. Panzi developed a pioneering holistic care model that integrates medical treatment, psychological support, legal assistance, and socioeconomic reintegration—a framework now recognized as a global standard. The hospital has treated more than 50,000 survivors, giving them pathways to healing and empowerment.
In 2018, Dr. Mukwege was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. His recognition extends far beyond the Nobel: he has received the UN Human Rights Prize, the Right Livelihood Award, and the Sakharov Prize of the European Parliament. TIME magazine named him one of the world’s 100 most influential people, and the Carter Foundation recognized him as a citizen of the world. He was installed as a member of the French Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques and joined The Elders, the group of global leaders founded by Nelson Mandela. Dr. Mukwege also co-founded the City of Joy, providing leadership training and life skills to survivors of violence.
As a speaker, Denis Mukwege moves audiences with his moral clarity, personal courage, and unwavering commitment to justice. His keynotes challenge leaders, organizations, and governments to take concrete action against sexual violence in conflict and to invest in the resilience, dignity, and empowerment of survivors worldwide.
Dr. Denis Mukwege has spent decades documenting and treating the devastating impact of sexual violence used as a deliberate weapon in armed conflict. In this keynote, he draws on his frontline experience at Panzi Hospital and his global advocacy to expose the systemic nature of this atrocity and the failure of international mechanisms to hold perpetrators accountable.
He outlines a concrete path forward—demanding justice, empowering survivors, and mobilizing governments and institutions to end impunity and protect vulnerable populations in conflict zones worldwide.
Panzi Hospital pioneered a model of care that goes far beyond medical treatment. Dr. Mukwege explains how integrating psychological support, legal assistance, and socioeconomic reintegration transforms survivors from victims into empowered agents of change. Having treated more than 50,000 survivors, the Panzi model is now recognized as a global standard for addressing gender-based violence.
This presentation offers powerful lessons for healthcare leaders, humanitarian organizations, and policymakers on building integrated care systems that restore dignity and rebuild communities.
As a member of The Elders and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Dr. Mukwege calls on world leaders to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive action for human rights. He examines the intersection of conflict, gender-based violence, and failures of international governance, arguing that accountability is not optional—it is the foundation of lasting peace.
This keynote challenges corporate, political, and institutional leaders to use their influence to demand justice, support survivors, and build frameworks for accountability that make a tangible difference in the lives of the most vulnerable.
