Few people understand the dark side of the internet better than Camille François. The founding President of ROOST and a Columbia University professor, she built trust and safety at Google, Graphika, and Niantic before launching a global effort to make online safety tools open to all. Cybersecurity speaker Camille François is one of the world’s foremost authorities on digital safety, online harms, and the responsible governance of artificial intelligence. Founding President of ROOST and Professor of Practice at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, she has spent more than a decade helping governments, technology platforms, and institutions confront the threats that define the modern internet, from coordinated disinformation to online harassment and child safety.
As the author of the widely adopted Actor-Behavior-Content (ABC) framework, François reshaped how major platforms detect and classify online manipulation, and she was among the first to document state-backed “patriotic trolling.” Earlier in her career she was Chief Innovation Officer at Graphika, where she led investigations that helped Facebook, Google, and Pinterest expose disinformation networks, and Principal Researcher at Google, where she pioneered new approaches to countering violent extremism online. She later built and led the trust and safety function at Niantic.
Today, François leads ROOST (Robust Open Online Safety Tools), a nonprofit she launched as a flagship outcome of the Paris AI Action Summit to make professional-grade safety tools freely available through open source. Backed by partners including Google, OpenAI, Discord, and Roblox, ROOST equips organizations of every size, from small nonprofits to the largest platforms, with defenses against threats ranging from coordinated abuse to child exploitation. At Columbia, she co-leads the university’s work on technology and democracy alongside Nobel Peace laureate Maria Ressa and heads a program training the next generation of leaders in public-interest AI.
Her public-interest work spans both sides of the Atlantic. She investigated Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election for the Senate Select Intelligence Committee, led the French government’s national inquiry into the metaverse, and was appointed by President Emmanuel Macron to co-chair a national assembly on the future of the information society. A Fulbright scholar and affiliate of Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center, she has been named to MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 and TIME’s 100 Next list.
As a speaker, Camille François brings rare authority to the questions senior leaders can no longer avoid: how to keep platforms and AI systems safe, how to defend democratic institutions against information warfare, and why openness and transparency can strengthen security rather than weaken it. Audiences leave with a clear-eyed view of the digital risks ahead and a practical, optimistic framework for building safer technology.
Drawing on her investigations of state-backed influence operations, from Russian interference in U.S. elections to networked harassment campaigns, François reveals how modern disinformation actually works and what governments, platforms, and citizens can do about it. She gives audiences a clear vocabulary for separating real threats from noise and a framework for building resilience against manipulation.
As founding President of ROOST, François makes the case that the safest path forward for artificial intelligence is an open one. She explores why public-interest, open-source safety tools can protect users more effectively than closed proprietary systems, and how leaders can embed transparency, accountability, and resilience into the AI systems their organizations build and deploy.
From child safety to violent extremism, François draws on more than a decade leading trust and safety at Google, Graphika, and Niantic to show how the world's largest platforms detect and mitigate online harms. She offers practical lessons for any organization that needs to keep its users, communities, and brand safe in an increasingly hostile digital environment.
François introduces the influential framework she created to decode digital deception, breaking down the actors behind influence operations, the deceptive behaviors they use, and the content they spread. Audiences gain a powerful mental model for understanding everything from coordinated disinformation to AI-generated abuse, and for designing smarter defenses.
